Cafecito On The Go !
Travel is something we all do, either for vacation or business.
In any case, I won’t be without my Cuban Coffee.
Here is one of my options that I use when I travel to get my daily fix of Cuban coffee.
It’s the Mega Cocina Espresso Cuban Coffee Maker.
I take it to locations where I have access to electricity. It’s advertised as a 4 cup, but to me it’s actually a solid 2 ½ cup. In a few minutes I’ll give you a method on how to use it when there is no A/C outlet to plug into.
“I also take along a Moka pot, just in case I have a burner to put it on.”
In my prior post,
I use the same method to make the coffee.
Fill the water to the bottom of the tiny pressure valve that you see inside the pot. Do Not cover the valve with water.
I use Cafe La LLave , Cafe Bustelo , Cafe Pilon for my coffee.
One thing to keep in mind is that this electric Moka pot brews much faster than a Moka pot put on a burner; be ready for coffee in about 2 minutes.
Use this first small amount of coffee, to pour into the sugar cup for making the espuma.
I only use these sugars;
I use a silicon spatula to “whip” the sugar and the coffee.
Take the remaining coffee and pour it down the spatula, as to not disturb the espuma.
let the coffee sit for a few as it dissolved the sugar and floats the espuma to the top.
Spoon your espuma off the top and place it into your cafecito cup.
Pour the remainder of the coffee into the cafecito cup, by using the side of the cup, as this will keep the espuma together and push it to the top of the cup.
This process looks more involved than it really is; all is done in 5 minutes.
Earlier I talked about having cafecito without an A/C outlet nearby. I’ve had cafecito on the side of the road by using an inverter in my vehicle. This is great for travel where there are rest areas where you can get out and relax; then make a fresh cafecito for the road.
Just hook the inverter to your vehicle battery and plug the electric coffee maker in.
*** keep in mind that the inverter must produce enough watts to handle the electric coffee maker. The above inverter is a
Cen-Tech power inverter, it produces 750 steady watts.***
***Many vehicles now have an A/C power outlet in them, but don’t assume that this outlet will handle 400 watts. Check your owners manual before you plug in a coffee maker.***
This Mega Cocina Coffee Maker uses 400 watts.
***Update July 11th, 2020***
The Mega Cocina electric espresso maker in this post has become difficult to find, but there are others out there. Here is where I got mine;
Sentir Cubano (Cuban Center)
Even though I was born here, I was unaware of this business. The Sentir Cubano is a small store on SW 8th street that not only has tourist items , but a room inside with a rich history of Cuba in antique artifacts; books, photographs and many items from a Cuba long ago. They close a little early, so get there with a good hour to look around. The staff are really nice and the place is a must see if you live in Miami.
3100 SW 8th St.
Miami, FL 33135
If you decide to visit, park in the Home Depot lot across the street. If you notify the Home Depot security in the parking lot first, they won’t have a problem with you parking there.
Here are a few photos from the business:
